Late Night Retardedness, Fobbiness, and Airheadedness

I went to Chula University to finish the last bit of my thesis yesterday. The lab was FREEZING and I know P'Ying will agree with me when I say that I don't want to see another spleen again for the rest of my life. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bangkok, Chula's right next door to Siam Square, the fashion hub in Bangkok where a lot of high school and college students tend to frequent.

I parked at Siam Square and walked to Chula whilst carrying a very heavy cooler that was filled to the brim with crushed ice and spleen samples (arghh). Along the way, I couldn't help but overhear these two tourists (telling from their accent, I believe they were from the UK) conversing in front of me:

"God, there's food at every damn corner of this god-f*ckin city, and look at the girls, they're all so god f*ckin thin!"
"Oh God, I know, it's in their f*ckin genes or something..."
"Look at those girls in the uniforms, I would look like a f*ckin pig in a skirt like that."
(long pause)
"They have no tits, though."
"Yeah, but we do!"

They were referring to a group of Chula peeps who were dressed in the standard Thai university uniform - a white collared shirt and black skirt that have your university emblem on the buttons and belt (I also have to wear the outfit to class everyday. Major suckage, huh). The remainder of their conversation swerved into the Atkins diet, the upcoming Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan, and was colorfully peppered with a lot more cuss words and references to God. I finally turned a corner and missed out on the rest of their very engaging conversation. (I wasn't eavesdropping, really, I wasn't. )

At lunch, P'Ying and I bought some bubble tea (sans bee this time around), but instead of having lunch, we, uh, sort of got side-tracked. What can I say, the shopaholic in us couldn't resist all the glitter and shimmer of all the clothes, and shoes, and accessories, and handbags, and CDs, and more clothes, and more shoes, and even more accessories. We at least had to buy something. We ended up oohing and aahing at the earrings on display at Bonanza (still in Siam Square, but across the street from Mahboonkrong - another shopper's paradise). I got three pairs. So did P'Ying.

Anyhoo, I called Siri and Caro and asked if they were free in the evening to meet up at Siam Square at 6:30, since my prof said we'd be done by then. 6:30 came and went. So did 7:30. As did 8:30. Finally, at around 9:30, I was liberated from the stifling lab settings and set freeeee. I was so, so tired, but dying to meet my girls. I felt horrible because Caro and Siri had been waiting for me for ages at this place called Hong Kong Noodles before finally moving onward for dessert at Mango Tango at Soi 4. Anyhoo, I was starrrrr-ving (the sustenance from my lunchtime bubble tea had long since worn off). I met them at Mango Tango and said adieu to P'Ying and her friend whom she was meeting up with for dinner (also another RIS alumni). Caro and Siri were in the process of sharing some mango ice-cream. Now, lemme tell you, this mango ice-cream was the real thing. It wasn't some counterfeit glop of artificial flavors and colors, but was like having icey rich mango cream slide down your throat. YUMMMMMM. Everyone, if you ever stop by Bangkok, do yourself a favor and go to any one of the many Mango Tango branches here and relish in some bright yellow Mango ice-cream. Believe me, your taste buds will thank you.

Me and Caro at Mango Tango. You can't tell, but I was famished. I made sure to conceal my fangs for the purpose of this photo. Didn't want to scare all you peeps away.

Siri and Caro by a huge picture of some tasty-looking tropical fruits. Can you spot the luscious mangoes? No drooling now.

After Mango Tango, we strolled around Siam Square a bit before deciding to take a few pics together. However, we needed someone to take the pic for us. Caroline suggested we stand around and wait for any random cute guy to walk past, and then casually ask him to take a pic for us (don't think he'll look so cute from behind when he's running off with your camera, hun ). Anyway, not one, but two cute guys walked past us within a time frame of about 40 seconds. Unfortunately both of them had dates/girlfriends. Scrap your idea, Caro, here, we'll take the pic ourselves! Siri, with her ever steady hand, grabbed the cam and snippity-snapped. Say cheese everyone!

At this point we realized we were beginning to look like a bunch of tourists in our own city ("you've lived in Bangkok for how many years??"). Hahaha. Anyway, it was getting a little late and Caro had class the next morning, so we piled into my car and left Siam Square for Sukhumvit (damn parking ticket practically emptied my wallet since I'd parked my car there since the early morning and they charge by the hour).

When it comes to driving and directions, I'm not so familiar with all the sois and curves and turns of the city. I have to say that, as the designated driver, I plain sucked. To avoid late night traffic, we opted for a shortcut and Caro took me through a dizzying maze of obscure sois and made me squeeze through these itty-bitty lanes.

Caro: Turn left.
Me: (turning left)
Caro: I mean right! Turn right, turn right, turn right!
Me: Aaghh!! It's too late to turn right!
(Lovely orchestral blare of car horns, all honking in syncopated harmony)
Me: You guys are wearing your seatbelts, right?

Jay Chou kept us company along the way (I managed to convince Caro to buy his latest CD, thanks to the Shuang Duo track), as well as F4. At this point, fobbiness emerged in all its full-fledged glory as we sang - wailed - Jue Bu Neng Shi Qu Ni at the top of our lungs (painfully rudimentary Mandarin and all).

Caro & Me: Oh baby baby baby, my baby baby, wo jue bu neng shi qu ni, ni shou xin ni sheng ying...
Siri: I don't believe this, you guys are so, so sad.
Caro & Me: hai zhan lin wo de xin zen neng wang ji, xiang ni jiu xiang shi hu xiiiiiii...
Siri: Somebody save me!

The driving along the way got a little, er, erratic.

Caro: Dammit, I'm so jao choo. What's another word for jao choo?
Siri: Uh, flirty?
Me: Player?
Caro: So, if used as an adjective, I'd be a playful person... hey! That doesn't sound so bad!
Me: (approaching an intersection) Oh crap, where's the traffic light?
Siri: Uhh... (searching) over there. Um, I think it just turned red.

Ooopsss. Some traffic lights at some Bangkok intersections are absolutely miniscule and located off at the side of the road where they're concealed behind various billboards, banners and ads. Damn you, Siri & Caroline, and your retarded retardedness, you nearly made me run into at least a dozen random objects along the way. You know my concentration span is rather limited.

The humble chauffeur and the "playful" Caro.

Poor unfortunate victims of erratic driving.

You can't quite see all the lights and late-night frenzy in the background, but this particular Sukhumvit soi had a lot of clubs, pubs, and discos. The infamous Taurus (aka Dea's 2nd home, hehehe) is here, too. I remember how everyone used to go there every weekend in high school.

We ate at this Japanese place on the first floor of Caro's apartment building. It was pretty much deserted, but the food was great. I had Oyakodon and I just have to say that I love Japanese rice.

YUM!

We had the whole place to ourselves. Wheee!

What can I say? We like our chopsticks.

They gave us water in beer mugs.
Uh, OK. Cheers!

Shoo, go away, time to chow down.

I finally got home at around 2 AM. I was exhausted but I just have to say that I have some of the bestest buds in the world. We act like complete ditzes whenever we're together (as if you couldn't already tell), but I still love them anyway. Awww.
